Five Scratch Activities Parents and Kids Can Share

Your child has almost certainly built something in Scratch that you have never seen. Not because they hid it. Because nobody asked. Between school runs, dinner and work, the window for shared time is narrow, and coding can look like a door you are not qualified to open.

You do not need to code to join in. You need ten minutes and a few good questions.

You do not need to understand a single block to sit beside your child and explore what they have made. The five activities below are the ones we recommend most often to Kids Coding Online families. Each takes ten to twenty minutes. None of them ask you to write code.

Why Ten Minutes Works Better Than an Hour

Long sessions raise the stakes for everyone. Short ones repeat easily, and repetition is what builds the habit. A ten-minute visit also keeps you in the right role.

The goal is not to teach your child anything. It is to let them teach you.

1. Ask for the Guided Tour

Start with the simplest activity of all. Ask your child to walk you through their Scratch projects, oldest to newest. Then get out of the way.

A few questions that tend to open kids up:

Resist the urge to suggest improvements. The moment you start editing, the tour ends. Ask, listen, and let them be the expert in the room.

2. Remix a Project Side by Side

Every shared project on Scratch has a Remix button. It copies the project into your own account so you can change anything without breaking the original. That safety net makes it perfect for a parent who has never touched the editor.

Try a turn-based rule: each of you changes exactly one thing, then runs the project. Good first changes include a sprite costume, the backdrop, a sound effect, or the last line of dialogue.

Your child sees you experimenting and getting things wrong. That is the whole point.

3. Build a Two-Minute Story

Pick a premise together, the sillier the better. A raccoon who runs a bakery. A satellite that is scared of heights. A cat that only speaks in questions.

Write six lines of dialogue on paper first, because planning away from the screen is a genuine coding skill. Then split the work: your child animates the sprites, you record the voices. Twenty minutes later you have something you both made.

4. Break It on Purpose, Then Fix It

Most parents wait for a bug to appear. Cause one instead. Change a number from 10 to 200. Delete a block. Swap two blocks around. Run it and watch what happens.

Then work backwards with three questions:

  1. What did we expect to happen?
  2. What actually happened?
  3. What is the smallest change that would fix it?

This is debugging, and it is the part of coding that transfers furthest beyond the screen. Children who practise it get better at staying with a problem instead of abandoning it.

5. Run a Family Code-Off

Set a timer for fifteen minutes and give everyone the same prompt. Then show your screens. Grandparents can play too, badly, which is half the fun.

Prompts that work well:

What Usually Changes After a Month

Families who keep this up tell us the same few things. Children start narrating their reasoning out loud without being prompted. They stay with a broken project longer before asking for help. And they begin inviting you over to the laptop rather than waiting to be asked.

None of that requires you to learn Scratch. It requires you to keep showing up for ten minutes.

When Your Child Outgrows What They Can Figure Out Alone

There is a point where curiosity runs into a ceiling. Your child wants a scoring system, or working collisions, or a game that saves progress, and the tutorials stop being enough. That is the moment a teacher earns their place.
